چکیده
The rapid growth of global maritime transportation has necessitated stringent regulations, like MARPOL Annex VI, to mitigate nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from marine diesel engines. High NOx output is a critical pollution indicator, and engines exceeding thresholds face operational restrictions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an aftermarket Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) retrofit in reducing NOx emissions from a legacy commercial vessel in Iran to achieve international compliance. In-situ exhaust measurements were conducted across varying engine loads. Prior to SCR installation, baseline NOx emissions peaked at 8.4 g/kWh, exceeding the MARPOL Tier II limit of 7.7 g/kWh for a 1300 RPM engine. Following the retrofit, NOx was successfully reduced to a compliant range of 3.8 to 5.8 g/kWh. Efficiency was load-dependent, achieving a 40.79% maximum reduction at high loads. Results prove SCR offers a practical solution to align non-compliant fleets with global regulations. Future research should focus on optimizing low-load thermal management systems.
