One of the positive features of the South Caucasus region, unlike its neighboring regions, such as the Middle East and Central Asia, which are facing severe water stress and crisis, is that it has abundant water resources and at the same time has a small population. It is this fact that has diminished the scope of disputes between the independent Caucasian republics, at least in the context of common waters. The main problem in the field of water resources in this area is the pollution caused by the discharge of urban, industrial and agricultural wastewater. In the present article, the threats that the independent states of the Caucasus region feel about ethnic issues and borders designed by the Soviet Union are the main reason for their divergence. Therefore, because water diplomacy in the South Caucasus region is not inherent and is affected by border and ethnic disputes, it has not been able to succeed in resolving regional conflicts.
